Llucmajor is not only the largest municipality of Mallorca but also a beautiful, authentic town not far from Palma. Surrounded by mountains and the tranquil Mallorcan countryside it offers romantic cafés and restaurants, a luxurious golf course and one of the oldest historic settlements of the island.
History of Llucmajor
The artificial caves of Son Hereu, Llucamet, s’Aguila and more caves near Llucmajor date back to the third millennium BC. At that time they apparently served as tombs of the settler communities. Later, during the second millennium BC, the megalithic Talayots were created. Remains of the settlement of Capocorb Vell, Mallorca’s oldest archaeological site, can still be visited today. Capocorb Vell is considered as unique, since the settlement is surprisingly well preserved. Thanks to its location in a part of the municipality whose economic productivity tends to be low.
Llucmajor’s first church was built in 1259. The town’s most important historical event is the Battle of Llucmajor of 1349, in which Pedro IV defeated the Majorcan King Jaume III, his cousin. Thus, with the dead of the king the Majorcan monarchy ceased to exist. Today King Jaume III’s grave is located in the cathedral of Palma.
During the 20th century, Llucmajor gained prosperity and prominence as a center of shoemaking and craftmanship. Today many people come visit the town’s plaza with its cafés and restaurants and the market.
